1) To assess noise levels experienced by those driving convertible automobiles on highways. 2) To compare whether these noise levels are affected by variations in speed.
Methods
A prospective study was conducted. Noise levels (dBA) were measured using a calibrated iPhone with DbMeter Pro software. Levels were measured at 50, 60 and 70 mph for both left and right sides of the driver. This measurement was repeated over a range of convertible automobiles.
Results
Provisional results obtained have suggested levels of 86, 86 and 87 (DbA) for speeds of 50, 60 and 70 mph respectively, with peak levels of 97 (Db).
Conclusions
The results suggest minimal difference between the three speeds. Thus, noise experienced arises due to a combination of factors including road surface, traffic congestion, and type, as well as speed and car type. However, while motorcyclists are well versed in using ear protection, this study highlights that drivers of convertible automobiles may also be at risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
